It’s Tax time once again!
By jmh | March 23, 2007
Just like any other year, April 15th is rapidly approaching! Are you ready?
In an effort to get ready as fast as possible, I decided to upgrade and make the switch to a newer and different personal financial software package to help me with the task. Feeling rushed, I overlooked one thing - would my bank be up for the task?
Would this particular bank offer a sound and user friendly on line banking system? Would this bank support the new personal financial software product? Would they offer good tech support in case I would run into a problem (which of course I did).
At any rate, it did not occur to me that on line banking could be made to be so cumbersome. I do most of my bill paying and much of my banking on line. It’s just much easier and so much more convenient.
I bank at two brick and mortar banks and one e-bank. This particular brick and mortar bank uses layer after layer of passwords and I frequently can’t log in. I don’t know about you, but I have a terrible time remembering all the different log ons for various accounts without writing them down somewhere. Doesn’t that defeat the intended security to some degree?
In addition, once locked out of my account, I have to wait for what seems to be a very long time before my login gets reset. I lost count of the number of times I have been locked out of this particular account because I was unable to reproduce one ’secret’ question or the other.
To make things even more frustrating, I have not been able to download any of my account information into my new software: I can never get the correct login. The bank uses yet another set of passwords to allow for this feature to setup. And yes, I have called the banks’ tech support but nobody has returned my call…. Yes, I am frustrated.
The bottom line: this bank does not offer particularly user friendly on line banking. And even though they support my new personal financial software, I can’t get it to work and I can’t seem to get any help with it. Now, in all fairness, I have to say that the bank is great to deal with otherwise. Never any problems as long as is not on line banking. They have the best bank hours, are conveniently located for me and they had a great mortgage for my family a few years ago.
Well, here is my lesson: don’t make any assumptions. Due your due diligence and then make a decision. And most importantly, if you find that something is not working for you, don’t beat your head against the wall… just make the necessary changes.
